The Honorable Alberto R. Gonzales delivered the inaugural lecture in the Lewis F. Powell Distinguished Lecture Series on March 31, 2003.
Gonzales graduated from Rice University in 1979 and from Harvard Law School in 1982. He practiced at the Houston office of the law firm of Vinson & Elkins from 1982 until 1994, when he became general counsel to Texas Governor George W. Bush. He served as Secretary of State of Texas from 1997-1999 and as an associate justice for the Supreme Court of Texas from 1999-2000.
Two years after he delivered the Powell Lecture, Gonzales was appointed Attorney General for the United States by President George W. Bush.
