The Honorable Sol Wachtler 51A, 52L will visit Washington and Lee University on Wednesday, March 26 to discuss the documentary film, “Hitler’s Courts: The Betrayal of the Rule of Law in Nazi Germany.”
Judge Wachtler will screen the film and take questions beginning at 12 noon in the Millhiser Moot Court Room at the School of Law. This event is open to the public.
“Hitler’s Courts” examines the perversion of law under Nazi rule and explores how distinguished lawmakers became complicit in the largest mass murder in history. The film features archival footage from the Nazi era, rarely seen photographs, and interviews with leading voices in international law, including Whitney R. Harris, a member of the prosecuting team in Nuremberg in 1947, and retired Israeli Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Bach, former assistant prosecutor at the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann.
The film was created by Emmy Award nominees Joshua M. Greene and Shiva Kumar, and produced by the Touro Law Center in New York City. Judge Wachtler served as an executive producer on the film.
Judge Wachtler began his government career in 1963, when he was elected a councilman of the Town of North Hempstead. He was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court in 1968 and elected to the New York State Court of Appeals in 1972. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the State of New York and the Court of Appeals, positions in which he served until 1993.
Judge Wachtler currently teaches law at Touro Law Center and is the chief executive of Comprehensive Alternative Dispute Resolution Enterprise (CADRE), an alternative dispute resolution firm.Email This Page
