Moot Court Board Kicks Off Busy Year with Robert J. Grey Negotiation Competition

Lexington, VA Friday, September 01, 2006

Just two weeks into the start of the school year, the Moot Court Board at the Washington and Lee University School of Law has already initiated its first competition. The Negotiation Competition, newly named in honor of alumnus Robert J. Grey Jr., began Tuesday, August 30, 2006 and will conclude with the finals on September 15, 2006. The administrators for this year's competition are third-year students Rob Rivers-Benaicha and Adam Hull.

Robert Grey
The Moot Court Board decided to name the competition for Grey, who is immediate past president of the American Bar Association and a member of the Washington and Lee University Board of Trustees, because of his extensive experience in dispute resolution. A partner in the Richmond, Va., office of Hunton & Williams, Grey's practice has focused on administrative matters before state and federal agencies, mediation and dispute resolution, and legislative representation of clients.

The Negotiation Competition is an American Bar Association Law Student Division sponsored forum offered to help students develop practical legal skills and emphasizes teamwork and the ability to resolve disputes in a negotiation setting. Teams of students acting as lawyers for opposing parties will receive confidential information about how they can best represent their clients' interests. The teams will work together in a limited time frame to find a compromise that is acceptable to both of their clients.

Competition administrators are expecting as many as many as 80 second and third-year students to participate in the competition, which this year involves an environmental law issue. Initial rounds of the competition will be judged by Rivers-Benaicha and Hull, with final rounds judged by W&L law faculty. The top two teams from the W&L Negotiation Competition will qualify to represent the School of Law in the National Negotiation Competition, which begins later this fall.

The Moot Court Executive Board, chaired this year by Christopher Price, administers all competitions for the Moot Court Program, which includes the Davis Moot Court Competition, Mock Trial, and Client Counseling.
